Emily Graham treating Guy
Emily Graham,
McTimoney Therapist
to the rescue!!!
The last event for the season was BE eventing at Norton Disney where Guy stepped up to BE100, after this event I gave Guy a few days to recover as he felt very tired after xc due to the ground conditions being boggy. He puts in 101% effort and I felt he had over-done it. Returning to light hacking on the Tues he felt he had lost his 'mojo', feeling sluggish, not wanting to track up and not comfortable being ridden. Although to the untrained eye he looked ok and being a tough little Irish horse he just gets on with the job. Through past experiences with my other horse coco (kissing spines) I am very sensitive when I ride a horse and know early on something was not 100% right. We gave Guy a few more days off ridden work to see if he would improve, which he did slightly but the best thing would be to get a professional to check him over. The problem needed to be sorted before he has his December holiday.
I booked Guy in to be checked over by Emily Graham she is a fully qualified and insured McTimoney Animal Therapist, I have used her for quite a few years her work really see good results and I highly recommend her to friends and clients. Guy is sound and hasnt had any unsoundness issues. As Emily runs a check over Guy she finds he is sore over the top of his hindquarters around the sacroiliac joint and tenderness at the base of his neck, many eventers would have similiar problems to Guy this time of year, she treats Guy with a combination of treatments:
Emily suggests giving him a fortnight off with some homework stretch exercises to do and reassess him then.
HOMEWORK EXERCISES: Once a day,

As Emily runs a check over Guy she finds he is sore over the top of his hindquarters around the sacroiliac joint and tenderness at the base of his neck, many eventers would have similiar problems to Guy this time of year, she treats Guy with a combination of treatments:
- McTimoney
- Laser
- Stretching
- Mobilisations.
Emily suggests giving him a fortnight off with some homework stretch exercises to do and reassess him then.
HOMEWORK EXERCISES: Once a day,
- In turn with each hindleg pick up hoof, hold and stretch forward- this stretches his hamstring.
- In turn with each hindleg pick up hoof, circle hoof 3 times left, 3 times right-this mobilises his back.
Basically he has over done it and needs time to recover, the outcome will be that he will fully recover but better not to have the problem going into a rest period. It is better safe than sorry to have him checked over, Guy has worked so well this year he deserves A1 treatment.
As usual never plan too far ahead with horses! My plan was to keep him ticking over for November doing a few unaffiliated dressage competitions and give him the whole of December off to recover from this season. Especially for a young horse time off gives them opportunity to relax and mature further in their body.
As the saying goes 'from a small caterpillar matures a beautiful butterfly' its very true with horses!
Due to this hiccup Guy will be given as much time as required to recover, returning to ridden work in a fortnight, walking out and progressing to normal hacking. We will still go ahead with his time off over December.
